Choosing to offer a Certificate in Cake Decorating at our academy was certainly one of the best moves ever within my business.I got to know each student personally, see their development while working and attending the classes over a 6 weeks period.Better yet, I got to see their hard work paying off, see some of them opening their own businesses and also be part of their graduation ceremony….blessed!
We celebrated this achievement on Saturday the 6th of July 2013 at The Spice Route in Paarl. Students that completed the 6 Weeks Certificate in Master Cake Decorating during the first semester of this year was invited to come and have a fun day with all of us.
Our morning started when we all went for a Chocolate Tasting session at DV Artisan Chocolatiers .They are one of the few “Bean to Bar” Micro Batch Chocolatiers in the world, promoting the original chocolate taste and steering away from artificial colours and flavours.Although the group of students completed their modules in Chocolate Cultivation and Decorating to an advance level, we all were very keen to taste and learn more about this subject.
A quick visit to their shop landed me in some trouble as I wanted to buy one of each!Natural flavours such as Rooibos, Expresso, Salt , Milk and Latte were just some of the boxes I bought.Did you know that there is more than 600 flavour compounds in chocolate and by eating dark chocolate, you will taste or smell them each in a variety of spices, berries, florals or oak. We tasted chocolate that were made from beans originally cultivated in Uganda, Sao Tome, Madagascar, Trinidad and Venezuela.DV Chocolates also offer a guided tour showing their Tempering and Conching methods that creates their lovely chocolate bars.
After the Certificate Ceremony and some photos outside, some of us headed over to La Grapparia Pizza and Tappas to have some lunch. We got the best seat in the house I think, with a beautiful view over the Paarl valley, I could have sat there for the rest of the afternoon….
Their pizzas has a thin, crunchy base which allows you to taste the toppings in their own right as well .The menu offers (besides the well-known favourites) also a range of Flammkuchen (Yeast free pizza dough)that has a Cream Cheese base instead of a tomato base. Definitely a winner!
I’m really so proud of these ladies and everything that they have worked for in achieving their dream. Some of them already opened their businesses and with great success as well.Even though they all did the same subjects and course, each one of them have their own strengths which they focus on to deliver a cake service to the public.
Do visit them on their Facebook pages or websites (as specified below) and support them each in their new journey to creativity!
Completing the course was :
Natashia Hanekom ( Cakes by Natashia )
Tanya Erasmus ( Rosy Cheeks Patisserie)
Lezanne Calitz ( Icing on Top )
Wilhana Hanekom ( Crumble Cakes )
